In my opinion this is not a great book. I was drawn to this because of its interesting cover. In my experience when a picture book has a really good cover, it is a really good book. I expected great things and was let down. The pictures are attractive, but that's just about it. I found this book unimaginative and a bit of a snooze. The text underestimates children's capabilities and what they might find interesting. Though you will not find me using this book as a read-aloud or in any class lesson, if your child enjoys it, by all means encourage them to read it!
Sometimes children do not instantly love to read the books we think they should be reading. But that does not mean we should discourage them from reading texts that we find "less than quality." A book like this might fascinate your child for one reason or another and can be used as a launching point for suggesting other books that might interest him or her.
