Mixing it up... This book is about an hispanic boy who realizes that he forgot to pass out the lists from his mom of what everyone is supposed to bring to the neighborhood picnic. In less than twenty minutes he zips to the grocery store, buys everything he needs, makes giant batches of guacamole and whipped cream for the dessert, sets up, and gets a group of animals together to make the music. It describes a different picture of rituals and normal childhood to children who may not be exposed often to these. What's more is that the book is in English and Spanish. This strategy can be good for ELL students (L2) and for native English students (L1). For L2 students, they can use the side by side text as a tool for learning a new language, and the Spanish is, again, good exposure to other languages for L1 students.
I did find it confusing the way the text bubbles were set up, however, because I found that it confused me when I was trying to find the one in English.
The illustrations are done in paint and collage. Looking at all the food at the picnic made me hungry!
