Corduroy

Corduroy
By Don Freeman
A classic. I love this one! The illustrations are adorable and playful. This book fosters childhood imagination: the idea that stuffed animals can be real and true friends to us during our youth, and that ordinary things in life can be more special than they appear (the escalator is a great "mountain," the department store floor a "palace")! The use of descriptive language, exclamatory statements, and onomatopoeia are pleasing techniques in this well-known children's book. Corduroy is a great addition to personal libraries and for use as a read-aloud in pre-k or kindergarten classrooms, but I wouldn't suggest this book for older students or as a supplement to a more rigourous reading curriculum.

  1. While I normally don't suggest books at this reading level for older students, reading a classic, well-loved picture book can be a pleasurable experience for both parents and students. Why not pull out that long forgotten copy of Goodnight Moon, Love You Forever, or Corduroy to enjoy as a family? Reading with your child on a daily basis, whether at an "easy," "hard," or "just right" level, can help to foster a life long love of books... and create memories that will last almost as long!
