Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey by Joe Cowley
So many uses for this book... Teachers will find it to be a tool for talking about the meaning of Thanksgiving, different types of families (the boy in the book lives with his aunt, grandma, and grandpa because his father works away from home for long periods of time), and different cultures. The author combines the English language with some Spanish vocabulary, making it useful also for ELL students. A glossary in the back of the book provides translations for the Spanish words used by the author. This book also comes complete with a lesson for children about nontraditional friendships. Illustrations are very colorful oil paintings and add character to the story. I can see myself using this book as part of a variety of lessons in my classroom.
