by Donald Crews
A wordless book that follows a red semi-truck from loading station to destination. This book is full of wonderful pictures of life on the road and street signs that we commonly see along the way--pictures so brilliant in fact that Crews won a Caldecott Honor for the illustrations. This book would be great to cuddle up and "read" with a child, discussing all the pictures. Young readers often are not aware that they can read things in their life without having been formally taught to read: a child recognizing the sign for McDonald's or a stop sign are examples of those things that can teach young children that they are already readers. A great thing about this book is that it includes alot of those types of things. One great classroom strategy would be to use this book in coordination with a literacy dig.
What is a literacy dig, you may ask?
ReplyDeleteIt is a very powerful tool for introducing very young students to the idea of reading. You can do your own version of a literacy dig at home by asking your child to look around his or her room, your home, or your community for things which he or she can already "read." Can your child recognize his own name? Does your daughter bounce up and down in excitement when she sees the logo of her favorite restaurant or toy? Your child has already begun to read the text (language and pictures) of our world! Pointing this out to your child can go a long way to building confidence and the desire to continue learning to read!
